Vonex Residential nbn® FAQs
A speed tier refers to the maximum download and upload speeds available on your nbn® plan. Speed tiers are measured in megabits per second (Mbps) and determine how fast data can be downloaded to and uploaded from your service. For example, a 500/50 speed tier provides download speeds of up to 500Mbps and upload speeds of up to 50Mbps. Actual speeds may vary depending on factors such as network conditions, your connection type, and in-home setup.
Typical evening speeds refer to the average download speed you can expect during the busiest time of day for internet usage, usually between 7pm and 11pm. This is when the network experiences the highest demand, so speeds may be lower than the maximum speed of your plan. Typical evening speeds provide a more realistic indication of the performance you can expect during peak usage periods.
The right speed tier depends on how you use the internet and how many people will be connected at the same time. Key factors to consider include:
- Your usage habits: Activities such as streaming video (especially in HD or 4K), online gaming, video calls, and large downloads require higher speeds.
- Number of users and devices: More people and devices using the connection simultaneously will increase the demand on your service.
As a general guide, a 500/50 speed tier is suitable for larger households with moderate to high usage, while larger, tech-savvy households with many connected devices, smart home setup, content creators and regular media file sharing, those typically with heavier usage, may benefit from a higher speed tier such as 1000/100.
The type of hardware you need depends on your nbn® connection:
- For nbn® services that connect via a phone cable (VDSL/FTTN): Look for a modem that supports VDSL or VDSL2.
- For nbn® services with a connection box in your home (FTTP, HFC, or others): Use a modem/router that is NBN WAN compatible. Check the device ports for a “WAN” label.
You may be able to use a modem/router from another provider. However, devices supplied by some ISPs use proprietary or locked firmware, which can limit our ability to change settings or support certain services, including VoIP.
If you choose to bring your own equipment, you are responsible for ensuring it is compatible with your nbn® connection and that you have access to the device settings, including any required login details or passwords.
If you have any questions or need help checking compatibility, our friendly Residential nbn® Support Team is here to help.
