Vonex Residential nbn® FAQs

A speed tier refers to the maximum download and upload speeds available on your nbn® plan. Speed tiers are measured in megabits per second (Mbps) and determine how fast data can be downloaded to and uploaded from your service. For example, a 500/50 speed tier provides download speeds of up to 500Mbps and upload speeds of up to 50Mbps. Actual speeds may vary depending on factors such as network conditions, your connection type, and in-home setup.

Typical evening speeds refer to the average download speed you can expect during the busiest time of day for internet usage, usually between 7pm and 11pm. This is when the network experiences the highest demand, so speeds may be lower than the maximum speed of your plan. Typical evening speeds provide a more realistic indication of the performance you can expect during peak usage periods.

The right speed tier depends on how you use the internet and how many people will be connected at the same time. Key factors to consider include:

  • Your usage habits: Activities such as streaming video (especially in HD or 4K), online gaming, video calls, and large downloads require higher speeds.
  • Number of users and devices: More people and devices using the connection simultaneously will increase the demand on your service.

As a general guide, a 500/50 speed tier is suitable for larger households with moderate to high usage, while larger, tech-savvy households with many connected devices, smart home setup, content creators and regular media file sharing, those typically with heavier usage, may benefit from a higher speed tier such as 1000/100.

Currently, Vonex does not supply hardware, but you can use your own modem/router or purchase one from a retailer, such as The Telco Shop.

The type of hardware you need depends on your nbn® connection:
  • For nbn® services that connect via a phone cable (VDSL/FTTN): Look for a modem that supports VDSL or VDSL2.
  • For nbn® services with a connection box in your home (FTTP, HFC, or others): Use a modem/router that is NBN WAN compatible. Check the device ports for a “WAN” label.
If you are unsure which hardware is right for your connection, please contact our Sales or Support teams for guidance.

You may be able to use a modem/router from another provider. However, devices supplied by some ISPs use proprietary or locked firmware, which can limit our ability to change settings or support certain services, including VoIP.

If you choose to bring your own equipment, you are responsible for ensuring it is compatible with your nbn® connection and that you have access to the device settings, including any required login details or passwords.

If you have any questions or need help checking compatibility, our friendly Residential nbn® Support Team is here to help.

We take all payments via direct debit from a credit or debit card. Your preferred payment method will be recorded during checkout. Simply follow the prompts on the signup form above. If you require assistance, please speak with our Accounts Team.

Our Acceptable Use Policy outlines how our services may be used. The service must not be used for illegal activities or in a way that is harmful, abusive, or disruptive to others, including harassment, intimidation, or bullying. We reserve the right to suspend or terminate a service if it is used in breach of this policy or our Terms and Conditions. You can view our Acceptable Use Policy, along with all other Vonex policies, at vonex.com.au/policies.

Things to know about your nbn® connection

You won’t be automatically connected
The nbn® isn’t the phone company. Once your area becomes nbn® ready, the existing copper network will be turned off. If you want to avoid being disconnected you need to talk to a service provider. If you leave it to the last minute, you could miss the chance of being connected in time.
The nbn® is only the start
Once you’re connected you’ll be able to access opportunities that haven’t been previously available in Australia. The big news is; if you’re a business with multiple phone lines and you switch to a Cloud-based hosted system you’ll be able to cut your phone costs dramatically which is why it’s crucial to talk to the right service provider.
You don’t have a choice on your connection
There’s been a lot of talk about FTTC, FTTP, HFC, FTTB, etc., but honestly, it doesn’t matter. The nbn® will install whichever connection works in your area; you don’t have a say. That’s why some areas will have different connections. The speed of your nbn® connection will depend on which service you’re on and how your service provider manages it, which is why not all nbn® connections will be equal.
The nbn® unlocks the cloud
Because Vonex nbn® plans give you better upload and download speeds plus unlimited data, you’ll be able to take full advantage of the Cloud, which means you’ll be able to store and access data anywhere in the world. Not only is it a far more practical way to do business it offers greater reliability at a reduced cost.
You choose which service provider to use
This is excellent news. In the past, the big Telcos had a stranglehold on the market and have been able to charge pretty much what they like. The nbn® is a real game changer and creates opportunities for the consumer to shop around and get a better deal, it also opens up opportunities to use Cloud-based systems which are cheaper and more reliable.
The nbn® isn’t the only option
There is another way, choose High Speed Fibre Internet, up to 10 times faster than the nbn® with speeds up to 1000Mbps. Business Fibre is the Rolls Royce of internet connections and provides enough bandwidth to run all your communication needs and more.
