Looking at the penetration of web-based business solutions and the dramatic, disruptive cost models available in the USA, it becomes immediately apparent that we are paying too much.

Australian businesses continue to pay ridiculously high charges for fixed phone lines and even those taking advantage of VoIP services have been slow to move to SIP trunks as they are still expensive here.

Rather than having 10 or 20 fixed lines running into an office at a relatively high cost per line, a customer should be able to get an IP based service with a single pipe to a single SIP trunk with enough lines for all users at a fraction of the cost. In the USA it is now possible to get a full PBX service to a handset from a hosted provider for the cost of a single line here… and often this online PBX service will include a huge bundle of calls as well.

Hosted PBX provider VoNEX is seeing the direct result of this trend as their business, based in Australia, is taking off faster in the USA as their wholesale partners offer aggressive bundling deals with great “all you can eat” value.

Recently inked agreements are delivering rapid results as businesses are quick to grasp the cost and functionality benefits from hosted solutions. Call centre functions previously restricted to expensive customised PBXs are now there for small internal sales and support teams, streamlining business processes and customer responsiveness. Twinning, where mobile phones ring simultaneously with the deskphone leads to greater connectivity at a minimal cost.

To find out how to get in front of his global trend visit Vonex today.

Passed away quietly while sleeping May, 2010

Once the mainstay of corporate offices big and small, the telephone exchange was a vital cog in the machine of business. It started in big firms as a small group of ladies crowded, often smoking constantly, in a small room plugging connections into a board on the wall.

The more recent incarnations of the PBX were still confined to closets around the world – although usually with improved air conditioning and smoking bans. As they moved from analogue to digital to VoIP and advanced features migrated within the budgets of ever smaller firms, the concept remained the same. Costly equipment with limited capacity on expensive maintenance contracts connected to expensive landlines at monopoly call rates.

The cost and scalability of the corporate PBX was its ultimate undoing. A great productivity tool but often at great cost. And still hobbled by geography.

The developments in technology such as the Internet, VoIP and massive growth in computing power finally combined to bring down the once mighty “box droppers” as some system integrators (SIs) became known. Thousands of users can now be hosted in a single server in a secure and resilient data centre, all backed up in another location. Handsets are now homogenous and thanks to another technology, SIP, users can now chose their handset rather than being at the mercy of the SI or vendor. Companies can pay a single fee per handset per month. Calls between offices anywhere around the world are free using the Internet, line rentals have all but vanished and call costs are slashed by the new SIP trunk vendors. And all on a handset that looks and works just like the one you were using yesterday.

It seems too easy, but the simplicity of the new was the hangman’s noose to the old ways.

But it’s not all bad news. New businesses are rising out of the ashes to promote and sell this new paradigm. Vonex’s wholesale customers offer low setup and cheap per user pricing models making communications simpler and cheaper for their customers.
